Mitchell Mc.Cabe - Our History
Mitchell McCabe has been continuously trading since 1901. It is situated in the heritage listed buildings originally inhabited by the Glasgow Bakery Company in the Emerald Hill Estate in South Melbourne.
In its halcyon days, the store saw up to 16 full time staff occupying the bustling premises. In the busy workrooms upstairs, bespoke tailoring saw suits and shirts being made for the wealthy customers of Middle Park, Albert Park and St. Kilda as well as the business community around South Melbourne and the City.
The past decade has seen many changes to South Melbourne. With events such as the restoration of Historic Albert Park, the return of the Grand Prix, as well as the increasing movement back into the Inner Suburbs by couples and young professionals saw South Melbourne again rise in popularity as a fashionable area.
